Privacy policy

What iKnowMyDisplay learns about your displays stays on your Mac. This page lists every request the app makes and everything this website collects.

In short

  • No account, no analytics, no telemetry. The app has none of them.
  • The app makes two kinds of request: licence activation and checks with Dodo Payments, and the update check. Nothing else. Settings → Privacy in the app lists both with their addresses.
  • History is off until you turn it on, stays on your Mac, and is deleted in one click.
  • Monitor data and reports stay on your Mac unless you export them yourself.
  • This website does use analytics: Microsoft Clarity, which in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland sets cookies only after you allow it. See Analytics and cookies. No advertising cookies or pixels.
  • We don't sell personal data or share it with advertisers.

Who we are

iKnowMyDisplay is made by iDevelopApps (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the iKnowMyDisplay app for Mac and the website at iknowmydisplay.com. For anything about your privacy, write to support@iknowmydisplay.com.

The app: what stays on your Mac

The app reads display facts from macOS and keeps everything it stores on your Mac. None of it is sent to us.

WhatWhereHow long
Display history (connects, drops, mode changes, sleep and wake), only if you turn it onA database in the app's shared container on your Mac90 days by default; you choose 7 to 365. Delete it any time in Settings → History.
Monitor data (EDID), including serial numbersRead from macOS when needed; shown with serials maskedNot kept beyond what the app needs to recognise your displays.
Your settings, favourites and anything else you set up in the appThe app's preferences on your MacUntil you delete them.
Your licence key and this Mac's activationOn your MacUntil you deactivate the licence on this Mac.
The list of display override files the helper wroteOn your Mac, so they can all be removedUntil you remove the helper.

Reports and exports (diagnostic reports, EDID files, history as JSON or CSV) are created only when you ask, and go only where you save or paste them. Reports hide serial numbers by default.

With iKnowMyMac. If you also use iKnowMyMac, the two apps share display and USB events through a folder on your Mac that only apps from the same developer can open. Nothing about this sharing leaves your Mac.

The app: every network request

RequestToWhat it sendsWhen
Licence activation and checkDodo Payments' licence serviceYour licence key and a hash of this Mac's identifier (not the identifier itself)When you activate, and from time to time to check the licence. The app keeps working offline for 30 days.
Update checkiknowmydisplay.comA request for the update feed; like any request it carries your IP address and the app's versionAutomatically from time to time, or when you choose Check for Updates

That's the full list. The app has no analytics or crash-reporting SDK.

Permissions and the helper

  • Accessibility is asked for only if you turn on brightness and volume keys, so the app can see those key presses. It doesn't record anything else you type.
  • Screen Recording is never asked for.
  • The optional helper is installed only when you first add a custom sharp size, where your Mac supports it. It does one thing: write and remove display override files in /Library/Displays. Removing the helper in Settings removes it and every file it wrote.

The website

  • Microsoft Clarity for analytics (below). No other analytics, and no advertising or social-media pixels.
  • One cookie, only after a purchase: when you return from checkout, your licence key is kept in a cookie for at most an hour, readable only by the server and only on the thank-you page, so it can be shown to you without appearing in the page address.
  • Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs (IP address, page, time, browser) for security and operations.
  • The compatibility checker runs in your browser; your choices are not sent anywhere.

Analytics and cookies

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand which pages help people and where they get stuck. Clarity records how visitors use the site: pages viewed, clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, which it can replay as a session recording or heatmap, along with browser, device type and approximate location.

  • In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, we ask first. Until you choose Allow, Clarity sets no cookies, so it can't recognise you from one page or visit to the next. Choosing Decline keeps it that way.
  • Elsewhere, Clarity runs with its cookies from your first visit. You can block them with your browser's cookie settings or a content blocker, and the site works the same.
  • Fields where you enter or see a licence key are marked for masking, so Clarity doesn't record what they contain.
  • We also send Clarity a few named events, such as stopping the home page tour, clicking Buy or opening checkout, with the button's location or the plan. Never what you type.
  • Cookies and storage: Clarity's cookies (such as _clck and _clsk, only as described above); ikmd_consent_region, a cookie that says whether to ask you first (30 days); and your choice, kept in your browser's local storage as ikmd_consent.

Microsoft processes Clarity data under the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Purchases and licences

Dodo Payments is our Merchant of Record: they sell you the licence, take the payment and handle tax. They collect your name, email, billing country and payment details under their own privacy policy. We never see your card number. We receive the order details (email, order number, product, licence key) to deliver and support your licence.

For an owner price, the licence key you enter is checked with Dodo Payments. We don't store it; a one-way hash of it is attached to the order so we can match the purchase to the original licence. To count the launch-price Macs, we record each launch sale's order number and how many Macs it was for, nothing else.

Support email

If you write to support@iknowmydisplay.com, we keep the conversation to help you. If you attach a diagnostic report, it contains what the report preview showed you; serial numbers are hidden unless you turned that off.

Service providers

  • Dodo Payments: checkout, payments, tax, licence keys.
  • Vercel: website hosting and the update feed.
  • Microsoft Clarity: website analytics, as described in Analytics and cookies.
  • Supabase: the launch-price counter (order numbers and Mac counts only).
  • Our email provider: support email.

How long we keep data

Order records are kept as long as tax and accounting law requires. Support emails are kept while they help us support you, and deleted on request where the law allows. Hosting logs are kept for a short period set by the provider.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Write to support@iknowmydisplay.com. Data the app keeps on your Mac is in your hands: delete history in Settings → History, or remove the app.

Children

iKnowMyDisplay is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we update the date at the top. If the app ever makes a new kind of network request, it will be listed here and in the app's Settings → Privacy before it ships.
